Description

Megtraco Kenya supplies the full range of LPG piping material used in domestic, commercial and industrial gas installations — copper tube, multilayer pipe, polyethylene (PE) underground pipe, black steel, and every fitting, clip and sleeve required to complete a compliant installation.

Choosing the correct pipe material is the first engineering decision in any gas project. The right choice depends on where the pipe runs (buried, exposed, in a wall chase, or overhead), the operating pressure, and the length of the run. Getting it wrong means an installation that fails inspection or, worse, one that leaks years later.

Pipe Materials We Supply

Copper Tube

The standard for indoor LPG pipework in Kenya. Supplied in 6/8 mm and 10/12 mm sizes, sold per metre or in coils. Copper is corrosion-resistant, holds its shape when bent, and joints cleanly with compression or brazed fittings. Used for appliance connections, kitchen runs, and risers in apartments.

Multilayer Pipe (PEX-AL-PEX)

An aluminium core sandwiched between layers of cross-linked polyethylene. It bends by hand and holds the bend, which makes long indoor runs far faster to install than copper. Oxygen-barrier construction and full LPG compatibility. Supplied with press or compression multilayer fittings.

Polyethylene (PE) Pipe

Yellow-striped PE100 pipe for buried gas lines between a bulk tank and a building. PE does not corrode in soil, which is why steel is no longer used for new underground gas runs. Jointed by electrofusion or compression transition fittings. Must transition to metal above ground.

Black Steel Pipe

For high-pressure industrial runs, tank manifolds and plant rooms where mechanical protection matters. Threaded or welded. Requires painting or wrapping for corrosion protection.

Fittings and Accessories

  • Compression fittings — elbows, tees, straight couplers, reducers
  • Multilayer press and compression fittings
  • Brass adaptors — BSP and NPT, male and female
  • PE electrofusion couplers, elbows, tees and transition fittings
  • Pipe clips, saddles and standoff brackets
  • Protective sleeving for wall and slab penetrations
  • Gas-rated thread sealant and PTFE tape
  • Warning tape and marker tape for buried runs

Selecting the Right Pipe

As a general rule for Kenyan installations: use PE underground, copper or multilayer indoors, and steel where the line is exposed to impact. Never bury copper directly in soil without sleeving and never run PE above ground where UV will degrade it.

Pipe diameter must be sized to the total appliance load and the length of the run — undersized pipe causes pressure drop, and an appliance starved of gas burns with a yellow, sooty flame. Megtraco engineers size pipework as part of every installation we quote.

Why Source Piping From Megtraco

We have supplied gas installation material in Kenya since 1969 and hold EPRA licensing and KEBS certification. We stock complete material sets, so a contractor can collect pipe, fittings, sealant and clips in one visit rather than assembling a job from three suppliers. For projects, we supply against a bill of quantities and can deliver to site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use copper pipe for a gas connection?

Yes — copper is the standard material for indoor LPG pipework. Use LPG-grade copper tube in 6/8 mm or 10/12 mm and join with compression or brazed fittings. Do not use thin-wall plumbing copper intended for water, and do not bury copper directly in soil.

What pipe is used for underground LPG lines?

Yellow PE100 polyethylene pipe. It is immune to soil corrosion and is the material specified for buried gas service worldwide. It must be jointed by electrofusion or proper transition fittings and must convert to metal pipe before emerging above ground.

What size LPG pipe do I need?

It depends on total appliance load in kW and the pipe run length. A single domestic cooker on a short run may need only 6/8 mm; a restaurant kitchen with several burners typically needs 10/12 mm or larger. Send us your appliance list and run length and we will size it for you.

Do you supply piping material for contractors and projects?

Yes. We supply against bills of quantities for apartment reticulation, hotel and restaurant fit-outs, and industrial installations, with delivery to site. Contact us with your drawings or BQ for a project quotation.

Is multilayer pipe safe for LPG?

Yes, provided it is LPG-rated PEX-AL-PEX with the correct fittings. The aluminium core gives it an oxygen and gas barrier and lets it hold a hand-formed bend. It is widely used for indoor gas reticulation and installs considerably faster than copper on long runs.
